Held, AN Art Therapy Group for Mothers
Creative Space to Meet Yourself as a Mother
Motherhood asks a great deal of us, often while leaving little room to process what it's actually like. This small, confidential group offers three weeks of guided art-making and gentle reflection — a space to slow down, express what's difficult to put into words, and connect with other mothers navigating similar ground. You don't need to be "good at art." What matters is showing up and trusting the process to do some of the work.

Who this group is for
- Mothers who feel overwhelmed, isolated, or unlike themselves since becoming a parent
- Mothers processing a difficult birth, loss, or a challenging transition into motherhood
- Mothers curious about art therapy/psychotherapy but unsure where to start
- No previous artistic experience required
What to expect
Over three weekly sessions, the group moves through a gentle arc:
**Week 1 — Containment**
Building safety and trust within the group; settling in and establishing a shared, held space.
**Week 2 — Being**
Slowing down and turning inward; using art materials to notice and express what's present, without needing to fix or explain it.
**Week 3 — Healing**
Reflecting on what's emerged across the three weeks and finding ways to carry it forward.
A more detailed itinerary will be emailed to you upon booking.

The evidence
Group art therapy is a well-established approach for supporting mothers through this stage of life. Research indicates that group-based art therapy is associated with increased self-confidence, self-esteem and wellbeing, and offers social and emotional support in a space that may not be available elsewhere. Studies with mothers specifically have found that working with art materials in a group can support the exploration of complex emotions such as birth trauma, loss, isolation and shame, and can help reduce parenting stress and improve the sense of connection with others. This isn't a substitute for clinical treatment where that's needed, but a supportive, creative space alongside whatever other care you may have in place.

FAQ

**Do I need to be able to draw or paint?**
No. Art therpay is about the process of making, not the finished result.
**Can I bring my baby?**
This group runs without babies or children present, so you have dedicated, uninterrupted time and space for yourself. Please arrange childcare for the duration of each session.
**Is this therapy or a workshop?**
It's an art psychotherapy group, facilitated by a qualified art psychotherapist ([HCPC-registered / BAAT member] — Morwenna Kotz). It's a therapeutic, reflective space rather than an art class.
**What if I can only attend some of the three sessions?**
Because the group builds trust and continuity week to week, full attendance across all three sessions is strongly encouraged.
**Is the group open to mothers of children of all ages?**
Yes! Any mother who feels this space may be beneficial for her is welcome.
